  • Vitalik Buterin sees a larger purpose for prediction markets beyond betting.
  • "Info finance" is just one of several concepts Buterin has outlined to potential future Ethereum use cases.

Adding on to a broader series exploring potential futures for Ethereum, co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently outlined a concept he calls “info finance.”

The idea centres on prediction markets — a use case gaining traction in crypto with the rise of platforms like Polymarket.

Buterin sees them as more than just betting platforms.

He argues that Ethereum’s network can improve upon applications for prediction markets by aligning financial incentives with accurate information generation.

In Buterin’s vision, “info finance” encompasses prediction markets as well as a larger class of applications that could enhance governance, social media, science, and decision-making.

“Start from a fact that you want to know, and then design a market to optimally elicit that information,” he explains.

This approach could enhance data reliability, leading to better decision-making where accurate insights are necessary.

Buterin also envisions integrating AI-driven micro-markets into Ethereum, making prediction markets accessible even on low-stakes questions typically overlooked due to insufficient participation.

In addition to exploring info finance, other potential avenues for Ethereum include user-focused enhancements like reducing the cost to run validators, improving layer-2 interoperability, and enabling more efficient transaction verification.
